From Yeast Cell Division to Human Cancer:  The Unity of Biology

Leland H. Hartwell, Ph.D.
Mellon Prize Lecturer

Leland H. Hartwell, Ph.D., is president and director of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and professor of genetics at the University of Washington.  His work over the last 30 years, using yeast as a model organism, forms the foundation upon which today's detailed knowledge of the molecular mechanisms controlling the cell division cycle in nucleated cells rests.  Dr. Hartwell's discovery of genes regulating the orderly progression of the cell cycle has had a major influence on our understanding of cancer and the therapeutic strategies used to treat diseases caused by uncontrolled cell growth.
